Biography

Rosa di Miceli, daughter of Giovanni Di Miceli and Bernarda Castelli, is born and baptized on 3 Aug 1856 in Corleone. Her godparents are Giuseppe Marsalisi and his mother, Maria Trombadore.[1]

She marries for the first time to Calogero Gattuso on 6 September 1874.[2] Calogero dies at the age of 28 in September 1876.[3]

Rosa remarries on 17 July 1877 to Biagio Merendino, son of the late Ciro Merendino and Francesca Longo.[4]

Rosa and Biagio have known five children: Calogera/Carrie (c. 1885), Bernarda/Bennie (1886), Johnie (c. 1894), Jerome (c. 1895), and Tony (c. 1896). In 1900, Rosa tells a census taker that she has had ten children, of which six were living, although both numbers are decreased to "five" in 1910.

On 6 May 1886 in Corleone, Biagio Merendino, age 34 (b. 1852), contadino, reports a birth on 5 May at via Triolo, #33, to Rosa Di Miceli, his wife, contadina. The baby is a girl and is named Bernarda. Testifying to the identity of the father, who cannot read, are Leoluca Cascio, age 72 (b. 1814), borgese, and Bernardo Catania, age 33 (b. 1853), borgese.[5]

Bernarda is baptized the next day. Her godmother is Vincenza di Miceli, wife of Giuseppe Vintaloro.[6]

In the 1900 federal census of Dallas, Dallas Co., Texas, taken 4 June, Joseph Merendino, unknown age or date of birth, born in Italy, heads a household at 134 Bryan St with his wife Rose, 45, born in April 1855; daughters Carrie, 15, born in June 1885, and Bennie, 13, born in May 1887; and sons Johnie, 5, born in July 1894, Jerome, 4, born in November 1895, and Toney, 3, born in June 1896. Joseph and Rose have been married 21 years. Rose has had 10 children, 6 living. They and their daughters were born in Italy: they emigrated in 1889. Their sons were born in Texas. Joseph and Rose are a confectionery dealers. Their daughters are in school.[8]

Bennie marries Salvatore Castro, a soldier in the Dallas Mafia, before the 1910 census.

In the 1910 federal census of Dallas, Dallas Co., TX, Joe Merendino, 60 (b. 1850), and his wife Rosa, 65 (b. 1845), head a household at 207 Merlin. With them are sons Jerome, 19, and Toni, 18. Joe and Rosa have been married for 38 years (m. 1872). She has had 5 children, all living. They are all recorded as being of Italian birth. Joe owns a grocery store.[9]
